This view is historically myopic. Many trans people identified as gay or lesbian before transitioning. Terms like "cisgender" (identifying with the sex assigned at birth) entered the mainstream lexicon through trans advocacy. When a gay man understands that gender is not tied to biology, he can better understand his own sexuality.
